APARECIDA SEEGER a) Mini Biography Aparecida Seeger was born prematurely after only six months of gestation, under extremely difficult circumstances. During the pregnancy, her mother was battling advanced stage cancer and passed away while still pregnant. This dramatic context resulted in a premature birth and led to an intellectual disability that would accompany Aparecida throughout her life. Now elderly, Aparecida lives under permanent care at Casas André Luiz, a well known philanthropic institution located in Guarulhos, dedicated to supporting people with intellectual and physical disabilities at varying levels of complexity. The institution provides continuous multidisciplinary assistance, including physical therapy, speech therapy, psychology, occupational therapy, nursing, and specialized medical follow up. Many residents require lifelong care, characterizing the institution as a long term care facility. Within this environment, Aparecida has become a familiar and beloved figure among residents and caregivers. Despite her cognitive limitations, she is recognized for her dedication, collaborative spirit, and supportive attitude in daily coexistence with other residents.
b) Interview Testimony My meeting with Aparecida Seeger to conduct an interview required a careful scheduling process with caregivers and psychologists from the institution, fully respecting resident care protocols. Visiting the facilities and observing the work being done there is, in itself, a deeply moving experience. Casas André Luiz hosts people with different degrees of disability, many of whom are wheelchair users or bedridden and require permanent lifelong care. Aparecida Seeger, who is also this author’s aunt, was born under extremely adverse circumstances. Her mother passed away during pregnancy due to advanced cancer, which led to a premature birth at only six months. As a consequence, Aparecida developed an intellectual disability. During the interview, I sought to observe the criteria required to determine the Factor Silva, evaluating the different coefficients that compose this metric. When analyzing her bodily movements — arms, legs, hands, and fingers — it was possible to observe that her motor functions remain preserved, ensuring a Physical Coefficient (PC) within normal parameters. When we advanced to the Sentimental Coefficient (SC), it became necessary to rely on testimonies from caregivers, psychologists, and fellow residents. Almost unanimously, all emphasized Aparecida’s strong collaborative spirit. She consistently demonstrates dedication in helping others and shows great respect for the institution’s rituals and routines. This posture has even granted her a form of natural leadership among other residents. The Intellectual Coefficient (IC), however, presents more evident limitations. Difficulties in communication and comprehension prevent the elaboration of complex responses or abstract reasoning. Even so, it was gratifying to observe that some residents — including Aparecida — are able to establish basic forms of communication using picture boards and pictograms, allowing them to express feelings and needs in a simple yet meaningful way. Finally, the Spiritual Coefficient (EC) revealed a particularly touching dimension of her personality. According to consistent reports from caregivers and professionals at the facility, Aparecida demonstrates strong material detachment, a deep sense of solidarity, and a genuine enthusiasm for life and the people around her. Participating in this interview and witnessing the institution’s living environment was profoundly emotional. Observing someone who expects nothing in return dedicate herself so wholeheartedly to the well being of others is a human lesson that is difficult to forget. Aparecida is affectionately called “Seixinha” by her peers — a tender adaptation of the surname Seeger that many are able to articulate. Witnessing the daily life of these individuals is also a powerful invitation to reflection. The simple ability to walk, speak, understand, and interact with the world — abilities we often take for granted — is revealed in this context as a true privilege of the human condition.

Although the Intellectual Coefficient shows significant limitations, the other coefficients reveal extremely relevant human dimensions. Particularly noteworthy are: • Strong social coexistence capacity • Collaborative spirit recognized by caregivers • High degree of detachment and generosity • A spiritual presence perceived by all who live with her In this context, Aparecida represents an example of humanity that manifests primarily in the sentimental and spiritual dimensions, demonstrating that human dignity transcends traditional parameters of cognitive performance.
